My education in barefoot hoofcare began in 2004 when my 22 year-old Appaloosa gelding, Taxi, foundered in his left front hoof. My farrier and veterinarian at the time weren’t optimistic for his recovery and didn’t offer any possible solutions.
Feeling unsatisfied with the conventional treatment of my horse’s laminitis, I went in search of alternative approaches to hoof care. An internet search led me to Dr. Hiltrud Strasser’s research on the anatomy, physiology and proper trimming of the equine hoof. I immediately understood that the cause of my horse’s laminitis was due to years of improper trimming, shoeing and inappropriate lifestyle (stall-keeping). I quickly scheduled to have a barefoot hoofcare professional trim Taxi. He has been receiving a physiologically correct trim for five years now and has not taken a lame step.
Seeing my own horse’s personality and movement change due to proper hoof care inspired me to learn how to trim horses myself. I became certified as a Holistic Hoofcare Specialist in 2006 and have since worked on horses with conformational problems, navicular syndrome, hoof cracks, crooked feet, severe founder, contraction, and dropped coffin bones to name a few. I have seen horses that were facing euthanasia come back to life with corrective trimming. Horses that used to spend their whole day lying down are now galloping in the field with their herd. Once the cause of the lameness is removed, then the horses can become fully sound.
I’m experienced in working on horses in a clinic/rubber floor environment as well as horses that live in a field atmosphere. I trim to achieve a ground parallel coffin bone, hoof mechanism and a sound horse.
Giving your horse ideal movement, a natural lifestyle and fully functioning hooves will allow the horse to achieve optimal health for years to come. My horse Taxi, now 27 years old, is living proof that this is possible.
